Pioneers Kick Off 20th Season

Start with the Open Cup

The Western Mass Pioneers are ready to kick off their historic 20th season. Head coach Federico Molinari has been assembling a squad ready to play in the extremely competitive PDL Northeast division.

The Pioneers start the 2018 season on Wednesday, May 9 with a challenging Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game against the Elm City Express at Lusitano Stadium, 7:00 PM.  Elm City, from New Haven, CT, were conference champions and won the 2017 NPSL championship in their first year of existence.  If Western Mass wins this game, they will host the second round of the Open Cup on May 16, facing the winners of the Seacoast United Phantoms (PDL) and Kendall Wanderers F.C. (Mass.) game.

“It is very difficult to have the NPSL’s best team play us for the first game” commented coach Molinari. “Our team is still learning how to play with each other.  But sometimes it is best to get put in the fire and see who can handle the pressure.”

Western Mass then commences the regular season, visiting the Westchester Flames in New Rochelle, NY on Saturday, May 12.  Last year the Pioneers soundly beat the Flames in each of their three matchups, but coach Molinari said “2017 games don’t mean anything in 2018.  Westchester has a good core and a good coach.  We need to play every game like it is a must win.”

After Westchester, the Pioneers will either host an Open Cup game on Wednesday, May 16 or they will visit AC Connecticut on Saturday, May 19.
