Molinari Returns to Coach Pioneers

Tryouts also announced for January

The Western Mass Pioneers are pleased to announce that Federico Molinari is returning to coach the team for the 2017 season. Molinari played six seasons for the Pioneers (2003, 2006-2010) and was the Pioneers head coach in 2012-2014, and in 2016.

“I’m very excited to return to the Pioneers” stated Molinari. “We have a lot of work to do to bring in players that want to improve their game, practice hard, and get results on the field. Our goal is to make the playoffs and to qualify for the 2018 US Open Cup.”

2016 was a highly successful year for Western Mass under coach Molinari. The team finished second in their division and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2008. The Pioneers also had a four game win streak along with an eight game unbeaten streak. It is also likely the team qualified for the 2017 US Open Cup, a prestigious competition the team has appeared in 9 times before.

Dennis Gomes will return as Molinari’s assistant coach. Gomes was Pioneers head coach in 2015, and has been a longtime assistant working with Molinari. “I look forward to help develop future professional soccer players this season with Federico” Gomes replied.

The Pioneers will be holding tryouts on January 21, 6-8 PM at Soccer City in Wilbraham. The cost is $50, and it includes the training session along with a Pioneers t-shirt. Please visit for more information and to register.

“We are hoping to get a good turnout and hopefully identify some players that can help us this year” commented Pioneers general manager Greg Kolodziey. “We just returned from the USL league meetings finalizing the schedule and getting ready for the 2017 season. We need to have a good team this year to compete in our division.”
