The Western Mass Pioneers kicked off the 2016 Premier Development League (PDL) season with a 1-1 tie at longtime rivals the Seacoast Phantoms.

On a chilly night, the Pioneers controlled much of the game but went into halftime with a 0-0 tie. After the break, Western Mass continued dominance, seeing forward Chris Roswess scoring in the 55th minute with the assist by Maxi Viera. This woke up Seacoast, which started attacking at a furious pace with 20 minutes left into the game. Ex Pioneers player Alencar Junior scored for the Phantoms with a high shot that beat goalkeeper Nick Zucco. Junior almost tallied the winner with 7 minutes left, but the shot went off the crossbar.

“I’m happy with the result” commented Pioneers head coach Federico Molinari. “I see improvements that we need, but to get a point at a tough opponent is critical.”
