Pioneers Kick Off 2017 Season

Host Open Cup Game May 10, on the Road May 13

The Western Mass Pioneers are ready to kick off a busy 2017 season! It begins at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow, MA this Wednesday, May 10 at 7 PM in a 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup game.  This is the tenth time the Pioneers have played in the Open Cup, qualifying for the first time in 1998.

The Pioneers will host NPSL team Boston City FC for the first time in franchise history.  Boston City FC already has started their league season and currently have a 1-1-0 record.  Western Mass fans will also recognize Boston team captain Ronaldo Vieira, who scored 22 goals for the Pioneers in 2012-2013.

“It will be a challenge” commented Head Coach Federico Molinari.  “Boston City has a very good team and has already played a couple games this season.  This will be our first game. Our returning players have to quickly gel with the new players to fight for a win.”

If the Pioneers win, they will host the second round game on May 17 against the winner of the GPS Portland Phoenix (PDL) and GPS Omens (BSSL) game.

After their Open Cup game, the Pioneers will start the 2017 PDL season on the road at Seacoast United Phantoms.  The Phantoms will play all their home games in Amesbury, MA. In 2016, the Pioneers also opened their season on the road at Seacoast, which ended in a 1-1 tie.  Western Mass and Seacoast also tied 2-2 at Lusitano Stadium later in the 2016 season.

“Seacoast is good and we have a long time rivalry with them” commented team General Manager Greg Kolodziey.  “We are going to play hard and hopefully steal some points.”
