Pioneers Win Twice

Host GPS Portland this Friday

After a disappointing 2-0 loss at the Seacoast United Phantoms last Friday to open the PDL season, the Pioneers regrouped to win twice over the weekend.

On Friday, Western Mass visited AC Connecticut. This I91 rivalry saw the Pioneers dominate for long stretches in the game that saw some physical play. Western Mass prevailed 2-0 with a goal by Kyle Tomas and a penalty kick by Carlos Ruiz.

Sunday the Pioneers outlasted a feisty Westchester Flames team in a match that saw a lot of important plays in the midfield. Carlos Ruiz quickly opened the scoring in the 16’, and Western Mass was able to contain Westchester’s quick counter attacks. Alex Wrona was able to seal the win in the 85’ with an incredible free kick from the top corner outside the box.

“I thought we played better Friday against AC Connecticut, but a win is a win” commented Head Coach Federico Molinari. “Every game is important. We have to be ready for GPS Portland at Lusitano Stadium on Friday.”

The Pioneers’ next game will be at home against GPS Portland Phoenix on Friday, May 26, 7:30 PM. The Phoenix are always a perennial conference power. Last year GPS beat the Pioneers twice, and in 2017 they are 1-0-0 so far.
