Pioneers Tie at Long Island

Return for Home Opener this Sunday

The Western Mass Pioneers continued the 2016 Premier Development League (PDL) season with a 2-2 tie at the Long Island Rough Riders.  The Pioneers opened up the season with a tie at the Seacoast Phantoms.  Both Riders and Phantoms qualified for the 2015 PDL playoffs and the 2016 US Open Cup.

The Pioneers opened up scoring in the 31’ with a nice goal by Chris Roswess.  Roswess also scored in the home opener.  But midfielder Colin Murphy was able to tie it for Long Island ten minutes later.  Western Mass’ Mauricio “Toto” Coimbra scored in 77’, and the Pioneers bunkered down to try to escape with the win.  Even though the Rough Riders played on Wednesday in the US Open Cup, they did not tire and was able to slip one by the goalie with three minutes left to salvage a tie.

“It’s good to get points on the road against two tough teams, but it is bad that we let up last minute goals in both games.  We are going to work on it this week in practice and be ready to play FA Euro on Sunday.” Commented head coach Federico Molinari.

The Pioneers return to Lusitano Stadium for their home opener on Sunday, May 22, 4 PM vs. FA Euro.  This is the first time in franchise history that these teams face each other.  FA Euro is based out of Queens, NY and played in the Mid Atlantic division last season.  FA Euro opened the season with a 1-0 loss to the Westchester Flames.

Lusitano Stadium will also be unveiling the famous Eusébio statue at this game. Please follow us on social media for up to date information on the exact time and more details.
