Pioneers Get Ready for 20th Season

Highlights include a Commemorative Game

The Western Mass Pioneers had a busy offseason to prepare for their historic 20th season.  “It’s really amazing” commented Pioneers President Celso Correia.  “When we decided to create a team in 1997, that started play in 1998 in the USL D-3 Pro League, we never imagined it would last this long.  It is a testament to our community and fans.”

The Pioneers started their offseason by making it a priority to resign Head Coach Federico Molinari.  Molinari has been the head coach of the Pioneers since 2012 and has found success on the field, along with building meaningful relationships with his players and in the soccer community.  Molinari has an extensive and successful history both in the United States and internationally as a player and a coach.

“I’m happy to return as Pioneers Head Coach” stated Molinari. “I’m looking forward to having a successful year. This is also the 20th anniversary of the Western Mass Pioneers.  We will have to make a big splash in the PDL to make our fans happy.”

The Pioneers 2018 season has been released.  They kick off their league play on the road on May 12, and their home opener at Lusitano Stadium is May 23 vs. FC Boston.  The PDL season wraps up on July 15.  The Pioneers will face a new divisional team too, playing Great Barrington MA three times.

The Pioneers are still waiting to hear from the United States Soccer Federation if they qualified for the 2018 US Open Cup.  Other season highlights include an exhibition game vs. the New England Revolution U23 at Lusitano Stadium on June 1.  After the PDL season, in August, date and time TBA, the Pioneers will be hosting a 20th Anniversary Game.  This game will feature past Pioneers players in a fun game for the fans to celebrate team history.

“We really needed to do something special for our 20th year” said General Manager Greg Kolodziey.  “We thought having a game with players from the past would be a lot of fun!”  Former Pioneers players interested in playing this game are encouraged to contact the Pioneers.

Alongside the 20th Anniversary game, the Pioneers are announcing their Pioneers 20th Anniversary Team, which is composed of the top 20 players in team history.  Players will be announced weekly leading up to the start of the season. The first player named is Everson Maciel.  Maciel played here 2004-2008 and made 2004, 2005, and 2006 All League First Team, 2007 All League Second Team, and named #9 on the USL Second Division Top Team of the Decade.  He stated that "It is an honor to be on the Top 20 Players for such a great club. Western Mass Pioneers has the best soccer environment in the country. For me it was always a pleasure playing for the club. There is no way to not give 110% in every game when you play at Lusitano stadium. Thanks to everyone involved within the club. You are the best!"
